Good Friday
Did I cry hosanna and crucify in the same breath? Palm in one hand, sword in the left
“I’ll never leave your side!” Vehemently cried
Only to deny, scatter, hide, At first sign of suffering
“Friend, do what you came to do” He said, Looking me in the eye Only to give a Silver Kiss Condemnation sealed with this sign
I, who could not keep watch,
After bread, blessed and broken,
After wine and washed feet
Now watch, body torn, blood poured
My master, beloved, taken instead of me
Down the way of suffering
He carried a tree
Mocked, struck, pierced, bled, killed “Truly He was the son of the King”
And I just can’t help but worry it was all a waste That my friend, the Son of God, Perfect, Trading his throne, rejection embraced
Oh God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why this waste?
Oil and blood and hope and a kiss
The walking, the fishing, the multiplied feasting Three Years with my Rabbi
How could it come to this?
You, the Great I Am
Could’ve called down an army Provided a ram
Yet you stayed on that tree That cursed, wretched tree
The greatest waste that will ever be
I thought he was the solution to what began at the tree Though everything did happen just like he said it would be “This, for my burial”
“Suffer many things”
“Given over to death” But now all I can see
Is
A storm rolling
And the earth shaking
A veil ripping
And the stone sealing How could this be good?
Me, no more than dust
Left without you, the best of us How could this be good?
We believe you were sovereign Thought we understood
You came to fulfill the Father’s will Could this be good?
No, there has to be more than this abrupt end I’d go back and change it if I could
What happens now? Jesus, help me to see
Is this good?
